Fashion Season, Apparition/Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven
a collaboration with Susan Cianciolo
presented in the context of "Strike a Pose: Festival für Kunst, Mode und Style"
This cluster of nature, fabric, film, and language, includes camera and performance by Scholz and Cianciolo, a dress by Cianciolo, printed fabrics by Scholz, the voice of trained actor Mary Manning, and words of poet William Butler Yeats. Items of clothing, and textiles are set free in a forest. Filmed live in nature, the footage depends on the collaboration of the artists with each other, the living forest, and the shared cultural inheritance.
The textiles respond to ghostly poetry readings, dressing the romantic articulations in their own abstraction, becoming characters in their own narration. Yeats' "Aedh wishes for the cloths of heaven" and "The song of Wandering Aengus" speak of a time when nature, art, humankind and life will weave into each other, describing the precarity that comes with facing the battlefield. "Tread softly because you tread on my dreams".
It is on the edge of this magic absence that this catwalk through sound, film, and fabric appears.

COSMOS 1939: Georges Salles/Walter Benjamin by Jean-Michel Alberola
Showing works from Berlin Childhood by Aura Rosenberg and Frances Scholz
On the surface this might look like a wry science-fiction joke: a beaming platform (Docking Station) in a corner to stand on,a glass plaque (not quite ball) (The Traveler) held up by delicate metal tendrils that transform white light into shades of variable color. Frances Scholz has been interested in the dangerous straights of science-fiction and the plausibility of the implausible for a long time. But this is not about an easy escape from global warming, by beaming ourselves out to the moon, say. And yet it is about beaming, and the qualities of light, and it is about solutions, somehow. These objects ask about transparency, transmission, and doubling. They ponder the rift that opens between truth and fiction, sense and non-sense, reality and representation, and settle into the operations of those limits. They are mobile or porous membranes if you’d prefer.
So how do I beam you through this? There are so many ways.

AMBOY occupies the boundaries between art and film, script and improvisation, horror and fantasy, cinema and theater, reality and deception, sparkling with homemade music and numerous vivid cameos. AMBOY promotes not bourgeois, patriarchal individualism but collaborated creation from within community. This collective approach, wide open to the input of the outside world, wraps principles of inclusion, indie rock, collaboration and experimentation in the liberating potential of narrative fiction. AMBOY is a film by Frances Scholz based on a screenplay co-written and co-produced by Frances Scholz and Mark von Schlegell. First premiering at the Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts as an exhibition in 2015, the cinematic-theatrical performance at The Kitchen was organized by Alaina Claire Feldman.

Angel of History is
the first solo show in Poland by Aura Rosenberg, an American artist
living and working in New York and Berlin. It follows a central theme in
her work: private histories embedded in world history.
The
exhibition, which includes photographs, sculptural installations and
films, presents interpretations of two of Walter Benjamin’s seminal
writings: Thesis on the Philosophy of History and Berlin Childhood around 1900.
Angel of History is a long-term ongoing project that includes an animated film (2013), a series of black/white prints Black Noise (2008), and a series of prints from the front page of The New York Times.
In a form that plays with camp and kitsch and evokes computer games,
the film proposes an interpretation of Benjamin’s well known allegory of
“the angel of history”. Compressed into five minutes, the film animates
the progress of history as a pile of rubble, from the creation of the
world to the present. This scrapheap, culled from an online pictorial
archive, depicts Benjamin’s single catastrophe. A flash of original
paradise interrupts the cataclysmic momentum and reminds the viewer of
the dialectic of history in which the past can be recalled only in
relation to the demands of the present.
In the photo series Berlin Childhood,
shot entirely in Berlin, Rosenberg found that the daily routine of
raising her daughter Carmen brought her in contact with the spaces and
experiences Benjamin describes in his chronicle Berlin Childhoodaround 1900. Unexpectedly,
this coincided with the history of her own family, which fled Germany
in 1939. Her goal became to produce photos to match each entry in
Benjamin’s book. What emerged was a retrospective look into the origins
of modernity through the lens of contemporary Berlin.
Galeria Studio is also premiering a collaborative series of short films based on the forty-two texts from Berlin Childhood by
Rosenberg and Frances Scholz. It features Chantal Benjamin, the
granddaughter of Walter Benjamin, and her daughter Lais. In addition, it
documents the commemoration of Benjamin’s tragic suicide at Portbou on
the 75th anniversary of his death. It features Chantal and Lais
Benjamin, Wim Wenders and Mark von Schlegell. Now the story of Benjamin
and his descendants resonates especially with the global refugee crisis,
and makes his forewarnings more timely than ever.

Fall Again as part of the exhibition Orange you glad you can read
In honor of the closing of Frances Scholz' exhibition Orange You Glad You Can Read, please join us for a lecture by Karl Schafer entitled Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz: Monads, bodies, and the nature of perception. Leibniz’s recasting of the rationalist vision of reality as a perfectly intelligible system yields a metaphysics on which the fundamental nature of reality is composed of an infinity of simple mind-like substances (monads) and physical reality is merely phenomenal. In this lecture, Schafer will consider the basic elements of this metaphysical system, with a particular eye towards the difficulties in developing a satisfactory conception of sense perception within its constraints. The lecture will be followed by a Q & A moderated by Noura Wedell in which she will discuss the relevance of Leibniz's work to the painting practice of Frances Scholz.
The talk is open to the public and will be held at the gallery and begin at 5 PM on Saturday, January 21st.

Before you become an interesting individual, you need many good friends in your life.
In my opinion the most impressive art scene was a group of artists and friends centered around the gallery, 47 Canal. They started at a building located at 179 Canal; they were all artist tenants and friends. Many wonderful shows were thrown at this building before the group moved. When they moved to the new location, it was the ideal space for an artists’ gallery. Again, the gallery owner and the artists were all friends. Now, 47 Canal is one of the most interesting figures of the New York art scene. They were able to make it due to their strong friendships.
I know another interesting group of artists who live in Köln, Frances Scholz and Mark von Schlegell. They occasionally come to New York to converse with Dan Graham. Also Dan occasionally visits Köln. Their conversations are fragmentary but continued.
France’s paintings are dynamic and organic and have a very human touch. At the same time, her intention is very deliberate, and her work often shows the amazing power of nature. Mark is a science fiction writer who includes sexuality in his novels. Young Dan wished to be a writer once but he is an artist now. His passion for reading keeps him connected with Mark. These three artists love and respect each other and are all interesting individuals. Frances made a film based on Mark’s story, “Starlite” (2010 - 2012), The writing and filming took place simultaneously, the processes mutually-influencing one another.
The screening of the film will be followed by a conversation with the couple, and Dan will offer his edgy opinion.
Science fiction enthusiast, Alaina Claire Feldman, will moderate the talk.
In conjunction with the "Fantasie" exhibition, the Halle für Kunst Lueneburg presents two films by the US-American artist and filmmaker Frances Scholz. Episodes of Starlite (2010 – 2012) relates the history, consisting of five episodes, of an imaginary continent on which male dominance has been demolished and an alternative society based on matriarchy has evolved. However, Episodes of Starlite is not only an attempt at a new gender historiography beyond the usual norms and attributions, it additionally breaks with the cinematic conventions of the classical fantasy genre. In Amboy (2015), on the other hand, a filmmaker searches for traces of the artist Amboy who died in Los Angeles and encounters mysterious figures and real persons from the world of art, music, and literature. Amboy is not only the filmic documentation of the search for a – as it turns out – fictitious artist figure, but also the name of a remote town in the Mojave Desert. With a vocabulary drawing from documentary, feature and amateur film, as well as from B-movies, the film condenses different narrative threads to a no longer distinct hybrid between fiction and reality. Episodes of Starlite is based on a text by Mark von Schlegell. The script of Amboy was written by Mark von Schlegell and Frances Scholz. Frances Scholz will be present at the film screening.

Join us on this very special occasion as Frances Scholz premieres Amboy, a new horror/sci-fi/literary/musical hybrid feature film project. A collaborative medium in the way that art often isn’t, Amboy interlaces
passages of genuine documentary with its fictional journey of an
artist-filmmaker who is led astray from her documentary project by the
mysterious intervention of deceased 90s male artist/celebrity, Karl
Amboy.
On location in Los Angeles and the Mohave Desert, Frances Scholz, a
painter and filmmaker, edited, shot and directed the film in a number of
semi-improvised sequences cowritten with Mark von Schlegell, art
theorist and science fiction author, encorporating an expansive cast of
actors and collaborators from the worlds of art, film, music, and
literature. Including the Hollywood actor Paul Giamatti, Andrea Fraser,
Sergej Jensen, Stephen Malkmus, Holy Shit, Kath Bloom, Stefan Müller,
Lydia van Vogt, Chris Kraus,Leslie Allison, Eleanor Antin, Penny Arcade, Lily Benson, Tif Sigfrids, Noura Wedell, Colm Tóibín and many more.
